HISTORY OF BIO CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

Introduction
The Biochemistry Department at D.G.Government Arts College has been a centre for teaching, research and community engagement since its establishment in 1993-1994. Over the decades the department has combined rigorous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with applied research, producing graduates who have gone on to careers in academia, industry, healthcare and public service. The department was founded to meet growing demand for biochemical education in the region and began life in the College Main building with modest laboratory facilities

Academic milestones:

  • B.Sc Programme Shift I was introduced during the academic year 1993-1994.
  • B.Sc Programme Shift II was introduced during the academic year 2007-2008. During that period new B.Sc lab block and upgraded instrumentations such as High speed Centrifuge and Chromatographic equipments were added.
  • Started postgraduate programme in 2011. The M.Sc Biochemistry programme was modernized with a specialized lab comprising of Equipment room, Preparation room and store room with special applications to Molecular biology, Clinical biochemistry , Phytochemistry and Nanochemistry Practicals and M.Sc final semester projects.
  • The Ph.D programme was added both part time and full time mode from the academic year 2017-2018 to meet the growing demand for research in this field. At present 2 Ph.D scholars have been awarded PhD degree and 7 research scholars are pursuing their research.

Elective Courses like Bioentrepreunership, Bioinformatics, Chemistry for biological sciences and skill enhancement courses like Microbial techniques, Medical coding , Tissue culture and professional competency courses like Molecular diagnostics have been introduced in B.Sc and Skill enhancement courses like Organic farming and Entrepreunership and IPR is added to M.Sc Biochemistry to give a strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory skills, critical thinking, and ethical scientific practice. The curriculum balances classical biochemistry (metabolism, enzymology) with modern molecular approaches (DNA/RNA techniques, proteomics basics) and applications in healthcare and industry.

Recent achievements
